We were delighted
last Wednesday, when we welcomed some very special visitors to our Key Stage 1
Assembly: Sally, 3 and a half months
old, and her half-brother Polo, along with, Joan and Antony their humans!

The Year 1
children have been learning about their senses this term, and are currently
working on a project to design a toy for a child with a sensory
impairment. They were, therefore, very
interested to find out about the life and work of the Guide Dogs.
Joan told us all
about how the dogs are trained, and we learnt about the wonderful work they do
to help blind people. Many of the
children were lucky enough to stroke the dogs, but importantly we learned that
when a Guide Dog is on duty with a blind person you should never approach it
and stroke it – however irresistible it may be!
You may ask the blind person’s permission to stroke the dog, but they
may well have to say ‘no’.

We all had an
opportunity to ask questions about the dogs and were amazed at how well the
dogs coped with being in the company of so many children, and we were very
proud that our visitors complimented Key Stage 1 on their excellent behaviour
in assembly.
We all feel very happy that
our school’s fund raising to sponsor a Guide Dog is going towards these
marvellous animals.
