Victorian Day

Inspired by their earlier work finding out about what school was like for their grandparents, the Year 1 children stepped back in time this week.  Their classrooms were transformed into Victorian School Rooms, the children dressed up in Victorian clothes and even their teachers dressed up as Victorian school ma'ams brandishing canes - but they didn't use them!

It was an interesting experience to have rows of desks instead of tables to work at, and we all enjoyed having a go at Victorian handwriting.  There was a fitness drill and Victorian rules to obey, such as standing up if an adult entered the room.

We tasted some food that Victorian children would have eaten:  gruel for those in the workhouse, and Victoria Sponge for the rich children.  We also found out about some of the toys Victorian children would have played with.

We all had a great time learning about Victorian school life and we hope you like the photos of the day.
